Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve

Suklaphanta wildlife reserve is situated in the extreme South West of Nepal. It was established in 1969 with an area of 155 sq km and would be 305 sq/km after the completion of its extension. The name of the park is derived from the largest grassland called SuklaPhanta. It is one of the last remaining habitats for such threatened animals like Hispid Hare and deer. Suklaphanta is the stronghold for another endangered animal- the Barasingha, or swamp deer (with the largest population of 2000 currently in Nepal only).

Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve is the habitat of animals, birds, reptiles, mammals, etc. In the rivers, lakes and pond, 28 fish species and 12 reptiles and amphibians are found like Mahseer and Rohu, Mugger crocodile,  Indian rock python, Monitor lizard, Indian cobra, common krait and Oriental rat snake. The reserve includes 46 mammals like Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, sloth bear, swamp deer, elephant and hispid hare.

Great one horned Rhinoceros were trans-located from Chitwan National Park to establish a third viable population in the country. Around 423 birds species are found here like swamp francolin, rufous-rumped grassbird, chestnut-capped babbler, Jerdons babbler, spot-bellied eagle owl, dusky eagle owl, rufous-bellied eagle, Oriental pied hornbill, great slaty woodpecker and white-naped woodpecker.

From a nearby machan, one can watch thousands of water fowl mingling on the lake surface while hundreds of swamp deer grazing at the water-edge in the evening-light. The experience is just unique and wonderful.
